Mobile giant Vodafone who’s head office is in Newbury, Berkshire is set to announce hundreds of job cuts tomorrow.
The group first unveiled plans for cost reductions last November as part of a strategy to offset the impact of the recession on consumer spending.
Vodafone, which twice scaled back revenue hopes last year as conditions worsened in the UK and other key markets - said the pound’s slump had boosted full year revenue expectations.
The company has seen conditions worsen in the UK and other key markets as the recession has deepened, hitting sales of handsets.
Today’s news comes as a major blow to the companies 10,000 UK Workforce and potentially effects many areas of the county with call centres and offices in Newark, Banbury, Theale, Trowbridge, London, Warrington, Stoke-on-Trent and Hayes.
I think that will hit Newbury hard they are I believe the main employer in this area. Have they given any indication as to whether it will be HO cuts or more likely to be aimed at their retail outlets, there are a huge amount of Phone shops on every high street, so maybe it will be countrywide stores?
This is such bad news for anybody working for vodafone.
I think everyone should just be prepared for a unpredictable year as far as jobs and money goes (the 2 necessities in life).
This seems to have been the general theme over the last few months, it’s not surprising, but is bad news of course. Like Sasha has said, this could be affecting stores countrywide as well. Oh dear, not good. I think that 2009 is going to be a bad year all round!
More job cuts in Berkshire area - this is bad news. I live in the Bracknell are and it seems like Berkshire has been affected by the credit crunch more than some other counties.

Vodafone have a massive workforce I just hope there aren’t huge cuts or people in Berkshire will be suffering even more! Its so hard out there at the moment without all these job cuts! This is just making things harder!!!!
Yeah… not good is it? The politicians can say what they want but the world economy ( including the UK) is moving into a big RECESSION. This stems from bankers’ greed and politicans’ incompotence…..I reckon they should all be sacked!
